Johnson Named CEO and Chief Mission Officer for PeaceHealth’s Columbia Network
VANCOUVER, Wash. – October 10, 2013. Josiah (Sy) Johnson has been named the new Chief Executive Officer and Chief Mission Officer for the PeaceHealth Columbia Network, effective November 1, 2013. Johnson will continue to serve as Chief Administrative Officer for PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center, a position he assumed in September.
“Sy has been an integral part of PeaceHealth since he began as a CFO at St. John Medical Center in Longview in 2002. He has shown tremendous leadership these past few months as we have begun to navigate a new health care landscape in Vancouver,” said Alan Yordy, President and Chief Mission Officer, PeaceHealth. “His thoughtful and strategic approach has already made a difference in our efforts to ensure access to local care in our southwestern Washington communities,” added Yordy.
“I continue to be impressed and inspired by the dedication and compassion of PeaceHealth caregivers across our communities who work tirelessly to fulfill and sustain our mission of safe, high quality, compassionate care for everyone who comes to us,” stated Sy Johnson, CEO, PeaceHealth’s Columbia Network and Chief Administrative Officer, PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center. “I’m excited about the potential for what we can do by collaborating within our own organization, as well as with other partners,” added Johnson.
In this new Network CEO role, Johnson will oversee the combined Network activities of PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center, PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center, and associated services. He will report directly to Alan Yordy, PeaceHealth’s President and Chief Mission Officer. Joseph M. Kortum, the current CEO for PeaceHealth’s Columbia Network, will continue to work on key strategic projects until his retirement in early 2014.
Johnson earned his Bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Arizona in Tucson and his Master of Business Administration from the University of Wyoming. He is a Certified Public Accountant. Before coming to PeaceHealth, Sy worked for eight years with Big Four public accounting firms, KPMG and then Arthur Anderson.
His career with PeaceHealth began in May of 2002 as the Chief Financial Officer of the Lower Columbia Region. He served in that position for five years before transitioning to the role of Chief Operating Officer in 2008 and Chief Executive Officer/Chief Mission Officer in 2009. He has a strong commitment to providing excellent patient care in the communities he serves and has a collaborative leadership style.
Johnson was nationally recognized in 2012 as one of Tomorrow’s Leaders in Catholic healthcare by the Catholic Healthcare Association. He is a member of the Cowlitz Economic Development Council, WA State Hospital Patient Safety Committee, WA State Hospital Policy Committee, and serves on the Catholic Health Association Health Progress Editorial Advisory Committee.
