,

Michael Higgins, MD, joined PeaceHealth in 2023 as a general and trauma surgeon. He practices the full scope of general surgery using a minimally invasive approach. He’s particularly interested in hernia and colorectal surgery. Dr. Higgins completed his medical degree at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, and a fellowship in laparoscopic surgery in the Franciscan Health System West. Previously, he worked in private practice in Bellingham for ten years. Before medical school, he was a tank commander in the U.S. Army, a bicycle messenger and a graduate student in applied mathematics. He also has a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York and holds a master’s degree from the University of Washington. “My goal as a surgeon is to help my patients make informed choices about their health,” says Dr. Higgins of his practice philosophy. “Surgery is an option, and I believe that the care of patients occurs before, during and after surgery. I like to emphasize trust, communication and continuity of care.” Dr. Higgins is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons and a member of the Whatcom County and Washington State Medical Associations. Dr. Higgins spends his free time riding bicycles and with his family. They enjoy hiking, boating, camping and snowshoeing around the Bellingham area.
