About Courageous Kids
Adults sometimes want to protect children from the facts of a death, thinking children may become too upset. However, children and teens, who don't grieve the death of someone significant in their lives, can develop physical and emotional problems. The mission of Courageous Kids is to provide a developmentally appropriate, caring, and accepting atmosphere to normalize a child's thoughts and emotions related to grief and loss.
Through art therapy, sand play, and discussion groups, youths may give voice to thoughts and feelings, remember loved ones, and tell their stories. Courageous Kids activities emphasize ways for children and teens to give and receive support from each other.
Courageous Kids programs also provide peer support and education about children’s grief for caregivers/parents.
Courageous Kids believes...
- Grief is a normal response to the death of a loved one.
- Children grieve as intensely as adults, but in different ways.
- It is essential for the health development of a child to grieve a significant loss.
- Healing from a painful loss is possible with support and acceptance.
- Children need support that is appropriate to their developmental stage.
