PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center welcomes new surgical robotic system

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center’s Surgical Services unit has gained a new team member: a da Vinci Xi™ Surgical Robotic System. The new da Vinci Xi joins the hospital’s first da Vinci robot (acquired in 2016) in providing the most effective, least invasive surgical treatments available for urologic, colorectal or general surgeries right in Whatcom County.
Robotic-assisted surgery can result in significantly less pain, less blood loss, less scarring, shorter recovery time, a faster return to normal daily activities and (in many cases) better clinical outcomes for patients.
The da Vinci system offers a minimally invasive alternative to both open surgery and laparoscopy. With da Vinci, small incisions of typically 1 to 2 cm are used to introduce miniaturized instruments and a high-definition 3D camera. Seated at a console, the surgeon views a magnified, high-resolution 3D image of the surgical site. At the same time, state-of-the-art robotic and computer technologies seamlessly translate the surgeon’s hand movements into precise micro-movements of the da Vinci instruments. In other words, the surgeon is always in control, but there is no longer a need for incisions large enough to accommodate the surgeon’s hands.
The Xi model is more ergonomic and more precise than previous technologies, and has an even more advanced 3D-HD vision system that benefits both the surgeon and the patient.
The public is invited to check out the new da Vinci and help PeaceHealth St. Joseph staff give it a name! A special “Meet Our New Robot” drop-in open house will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 15, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the foyer directly inside the main entrance to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center.
Guests will be encouraged to participate in the naming competition, gain hands-on experience with the da Vinci and learn about the many capabilities of this technological tool. All are welcome.
