Open 24 Hours

The Haggen Family Emergency and Trauma Center is a 48-bed Level II Trauma Center. This means our board-certified emergency physicians can care for injured patients 24 hours a day. Anyone experiencing trauma, medical problems, emergent or non-urgent needs receives the best trauma care possible.

Injury Prevention

Education to prevent injuries is important. We work with organizations like Washington State Department of Health, North Region EMS and Trauma Care Council, and SafeKids Whatcom County to provide community programs including:

  • Fall prevention
  • Traffic safety
  • Safe driving
  • Child passenger safety
  • Utilization of helmets when on skateboards, bicycles or motorcycles and the safe use of ATV's.

Obstetrical Emergency Department/Triage Unit and Hospitalist Service

The Obstetrical Emergency Department/Triage Unit and Hospitalist Service, located within the Childbirth Center, is a satellite of PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center's Haggen Family Emergency and Trauma Center. It functions like an emergency department in that all patients are seen by a physician, triaged and a decision is made to either admit the patient to the Childbirth Center, or to treat and release them to home. An obstetrical hospitalist and anesthesiologist are also immediately available to manage all obstetrical emergencies.

Emergency Parking

Enter through the Main Campus parking area. Emergency parking is immediately on the right. Use the smaller door near the emergency parking area for emergent patient drop-off.

The Emergency Department holds the highest number of mandatory certifications per nurse, including Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Emergency Nursing Pediatrics Course, Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum, and many of our nurses hold their Certified Emergency Nurse. All of our physicians are board-certified in Medicine.

Trauma care is delivered by a multidisciplinary team. It includes the coordinated care of members of the trauma team as well as:

  • Trauma surgeons who are available 24/7 for immediate care
  • Emergency services
  • Radiology
  • Operating rooms
  • Surgical intensive care units
  • Laboratory
  • Physical and rehabilitative medicine services
  • Full-service provided by surgical sub-specialists and other medical disciplines

Partnerships in pre-hospital trauma care with EMS agencies, aero-medical companies, and with state and local law enforcement and fire and safety agencies provide the infrastructure for the trauma center.
