A recipe for caring

A patient gets a taste of home while in the hospital.

International relations isn’t something Rebecca Meyer would consider part of her work as Food and Nutrition Services supervisor at PeaceHealth Ketchikan Medical Center. But it’s a role Rebecca took on when a cruise ship passenger from another country was admitted for care.

The patient was far from home. He spoke a different language. And his Muslim faith meant that he ate only certain foods.

To show respect for the patient, Rebecca wanted to prepare meals that would make him feel more comfortable. She worked with an interpreter to find recipes and ingredients to make the meals.

The patient shared it “meant a great deal” that Rebecca took the time and care to prepare food that fed his body and soul.
