A provider speaks while petting a black labrador therapy dog

Hospital service dog inspires rehab patients

You might be tempted to just lie there, until your therapist walks in with a great reason for you to get out of bed.

A beautiful black labrador retriever.

Kim Lybecker, a physical therapist assistant at PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham, Washington, said she has seen it happen. "I have witnessed people who’ve barely gotten out of bed" until she comes in with Galice, the hospital service dog. "They will get up and out of the bed...for the dog," she says.

Galice, full-fledged service dog from Canine Companions for Independence, knows 40 commands to help a wide range of patients in speech and other rehab therapies. "She loves to walk around in the hallway carrying the cane," said Lybecker.

Watch how she and Lybecker work together to help those in their care.
