At the lake or in the living room, fishing can be a fun way to get moving.
You and your family can help one another set healthy habits using the 5-2-1-0 approach. Here’s what those numbers represent every day:
Here are a few ideas to try for the month of June:
To eat 5 veggies and fruits per day – Sample microgreens or sprouts.
Seedlings of vegetables and fruit are loaded with nutrients. Did you know tiny beets, radishes and melons can taste like their full-grown versions? These baby plants are a creative addition to your table. Look for microgreens and sprouts in the produce section of grocery stores. Or you may want to try growing them yourself indoors.
To limit screen time under two hours – Stargaze.
Leave your screens behind and scan the sky after dark. You might see this year’s strawberry moon. That’s the name of the full moon in June. Learn more about the stars and planets you can see and when.
To get one hour of daily movement – Go fishing.
Fishing can be a fun way to lure your family into moving. Look for local opportunities on the Kids Fish Free site. If you don’t have the time, place or right equipment, have the kids use their imagination instead. A stick and a string tied to a clothespin or paperclip make an easy substitute. Try casting in the yard or the living room.
To encourage zero-sugar drinks – Brew sun tea.
Put a couple of tea bags in a pitcher of water. Set the pitcher in the sun on the windowsill or patio to brew for a couple of hours. If you don’t have a pitcher, a lidded jar will also do. Sun-brewed tea makes a refreshing zero-sugar beverage. You can use herbal tea instead of black or green tea to cut out the caffeine.
