Medical nutrition therapy and diabetes self-management education are highly effective in the treatment and prevention of many nutrition-related diseases, like diabetes and heart disease.

We understand the challenges diabetics face when making health and lifestyle changes. We are experts in supporting those new to living with diabetes, those interested in the latest in diabetes management, and those overwhelmed or frustrated with managing their diabetes.

Healthy Living with Diabetes

A diabetes education series offered by our registered dietitians and diabetes care specialists. Over four weekly meetings, you’ll learn new ways to take care of yourself. 

These classes are offered monthly and dates/times vary. Ask your provider for a referral.

Class 1: Intro to Diabetes Self-management

Learn about the diabetes disease process, how to monitor your labs and data; how foods effect blood sugar; how to use the plate method and basic carbohydrate counting.

Class 2: Lifestyle Changes

Build skills in interpreting home blood glucose data; how to treat and prevent serious complications; understand how physical activity can help; learn advanced carbohydrate counting, heart healthy eating habits, meal planning and grocery shopping tips.

Class 3: Advanced Therapies

Topics will include talking about medications, preventing long-term complications, nutrition supplements, managing weight, solving problems and changing behaviors and habits.

Class 4: Coping Strategies

Discover support resources and coping strategies; how to recognize diabetes distress or depression; review of individual action plan and follow-up goals.

 

Drop-in for diabetes answers

A place for friends, family and individuals living with diabetes, pre-diabetes or concerned about diabetes to get their questions answered by a certified diabetes care and education specialist. No Registration Required – Just Show Up!

Costs and Insurance

Nearly all insurance providers in the state of Washington cover diabetes education, including Medicare and Medicaid. Reimbursement for nutrition counseling may vary with each individual insurance policy.

Physician Referral

A physician referral is required for a visit to the Nutrition & Diabetes Clinic.
