PeaceHealth Hospice and Hope Bereavement Services, in collaboration with the Clark College School of Nursing, is sponsoring a Faith and Cultural Panel to discuss differing cultural views of death and dying. The April 26th presentation will take place at Gaiser Hall on the campus of Clark College, and is presented free of charge to all members of the community.
“Our community is growing and becoming more diverse,” said Colleen Storey, Supervisor of Hospice Outreach at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center. “As caregivers, it’s very important that we understand how to best comfort people dealing with the dying process. Our panelists will discuss the differences and similarities in how their faiths view death. Better awareness can help avoid well intentioned misunderstandings – such as telling a grieving widow whose faith does not endorse the idea of an afterlife that her husband is in a ‘better place.’”
PeaceHealth’s Hope Bereavement Center hosted a similar panel discussion in 2017. The response was so enthusiastic that the organizers made the decision to host another discussion this year in a larger venue.
The panelists will present a wide range of religious and cultural views. They are:
• Rabbi Elizabeth Dunsker from Congregation Kol Ami in Vancouver
• Dr. Khalid Khan from the Islamic Society of SW Washington
• Rev. Adrian Bucur from Journey Community Church
• Yuki Sugahara, resident minister from Oregon Buddhist Temple.
After the panel discussion, audience members will be invited to ask questions.
