Do-Re-Mi – this caregiver uses her gift of song to inspire and soothe

DJ Martinez’s career as a caregiver began when her grandmother developed dementia and her family made the difficult decision to move her to an assisted living facility.

“I worked part time, saved up money for a bus ticket, and every holiday from school I’d go down and take care of her,” said DJ. “I’d sing to her when she started to escalate

because that’s what brought her back to me.”

DJ’s gift for song has served her well as a caregiver at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center. In her role as certified nursing assistant on various inpatient units, she sings to soothe whenever she is needed. A recent serenade to a highly agitated patient in her care helped calm the patient so much that the patient was finally able to sleep.

“I don’t feel I did anything out of the ordinary, as I treat my patients as I would want to be treated, or like I would want my family member treated,” DJ said.

DJ’s go-to songs include “You Are My Sunshine,” “I Can See Clearly” and “Amazing Grace”, although she’s also known to sing whatever comes to mind.

While we may not share DJ’s talent for singing, all of us have the ability to treat each patient with kindness and compassion. Never underestimate the power of a kind word, a touch, or even a song.

“Each time I’m working with anybody, whether they are young or old, if they are really upset, that’s what I do. I can sing. I can dance. I just try to connect in a way that makes them feel comfortable – so they can trust who I am and know that I do legitimately care.”
